Pyrotechnic Fuels & Binders

The other half of the equation: specialty fuels that shape how a composition burns, from the oscillating scream of a whistle to the clean flash of nitrocellulose.

Why buy fuels and oxidizers from one supplier?

Because they meet in your mixing room. Matched granulometry and verified purity on both sides of the reaction mean fewer surprises in burn rate, and one set of shipping documents instead of two.

Specialty Oxidizers & Color Agents

Small additions, big effects. Crackle systems, glitter, and the chlorine donors that make color chemistry sing: the details that separate a good shell from a memorable one.

The lead-free crackle standard

Regulations worldwide moved crackle away from lead. Bismuth oxide delivers the same dragon-egg crackle with modern, compliant chemistry at 99.5% purity. Pair it with magnalium and copper oxide for complete crackle systems.

The flame spectrum: firework colours mix like light, not like paint

Every metal atom emits light at one fixed wavelength. A star’s colour comes from which atoms it contains. You CAN burn two atoms together and your eye will add their light, the same way a phone screen blends glowing red, green and blue pixels into every colour. What you can NEVER do is change an atom’s colour: no additive, no ratio, no temperature will make barium burn red. You do not mix a colour. You choose the atoms that make it.

Metal powders are water-reactive. Store sealed in original drums, dry, below 30 °C and away from oxidizers, acids and halogens. Never allow dust accumulation.

Bonding Agents

The quiet heroes: the binders that hold every star together. Two systems, water-bound and solvent-bound, cover every forming method in the book.

Choosing your binder: water or solvent

Water-bound · Tapioca Starch PPC-BA-01

Activated with plain water, a few added percent binds pressed and cut stars rock hard. Slow, even drying: the traditional high-volume route.

Solvent-bound · Petroleum Resin PPC-BA-02

Dissolved in solvent, it binds and waterproofs in one step, and stars dry in hours instead of days. The route to weather-resistant effects.

Anatomy of a green star

Prime layer

Ignition surface: NC lacquer + black powder mix lights the star reliably.

Colour composition

The recipe layer: Barium Nitrate + fuel + Magnalium + PVC for deep green.

Binder-rich layer

Dextrin-rich mix that holds geometry through drying and handling.

Core

The seed the star is rolled around: lead-free crackle or an inert grain.

Three ways to form a star all three start from the same powders

Cut

Damp comp pressed flat, cut into cubes. Fast and simple.

Rolled

Built up in layers around a core. Round stars, even burn.

Pressed

Comp pumped or pressed in a tool. Dense, precise timing.

Binder math

Binders go in on top of a composition in low single digits, typically 2 to 5 percent added. Enough binds the star; more slows the burn and dulls the colour. Cut and pressed stars favour water binding, rolled stars take either.

From powder to pyrotechnics, step by step

Building a star

Five jobs inside every star

A firework star is a recipe. Every ingredient has exactly one of these five jobs, and we stock all five aisles.

Colour producer

Metal compounds that paint the flame. Each metal glows its own colour as it burns.

Sections 01 · 03 · 04

Oxidizer

Supplies the oxygen that lets a star burn hard and fast, even sealed inside a shell.

Section 01

Fuel

Feeds the flame: charcoal, sulfur, and specialty fuels like whistle mix and NC.

Section 02

Binder

Glues the star together and controls how evenly it burns from the outside in.

Section 05

Chlorine donor

The colour amplifier. Chlorine sharpens reds, greens and blues in the flame.

Section 03

How it works · the ignition chain

Fire reaches the prime layer first, and the prime lights the composition. Inside it, the oxidizer feeds oxygen to the fuel, the flame passes 2,000 °C, and the colour producer’s atoms light up at their wavelength. The binder holds the star together so it burns evenly from the outside in, layer by layer, down to the core.

From bag to burst in five steps

Weigh

Weigh each ingredient to the recipe. The CoA tells you exactly what is in the bag.

Mix

Blend dry through a screen until perfectly uniform. Matched 120 mesh mixes clean.

Bind

Dampen with binder solution. Dextrin and NC lacquer both work at room temperature.

Form & dry

Cut, press or roll into stars. Dry slowly and completely before priming.

Assemble & fire

Prime, assemble, always test small. The sky does the rest.

Produce it safely · the four house rules

Mix small, test small

Grams before kilos. Scale up only what you have proven.

No metal tools

Wooden or plastic scoops and screens around chlorates and metals.

One composition at a time

Clean the bench completely between different mixes.

Respect the SDS

Read it before opening the bag. Ours ship with every order.

Mixing that works · purple

Burn strontium red and copper blue in one star and your eye adds the light: purple, exactly like red + blue pixels on your screen.

Sr + Cu · ask us

Mixing that fails · green

In paint, blue + yellow makes green. In light, it just washes out toward white. Green comes from one place only: the barium atom.

Barium Nitrate PPC-OX-04

And white?

Hot metals glow at every wavelength at once, like a welder’s arc. That is titanium and magnalium’s job (silver-white sparklers use these same metals).

PPC-MP-03/04

Tropical climate tip

Humid air slows drying and cakes powders. Dry stars longer than you think, and keep bags sealed until the day you mix.

Storage compatibility

A simplified storage segregation guide for the materials in this catalog, plus two things every fireworks shop also has on hand: sulfur and acids. This is not a formulation guide. Always test small and follow the SDS.

How to read this chart: find the family your product belongs to, then read across its row. Chlorates = Sodium Chlorate (PPC-OX-05) · Perchlorates = Potassium Perchlorate (PPC-OX-01) · Amm. perchlorate = PPC-OX-02 · Nitrates = Potassium + Barium Nitrate (PPC-OX-03/04) · Metal powders = PPC-MP-01 to 05 · Organics / binders = whistle fuel, NC, sodium oxalate, chlorine donors and bonding agents (PPC-RF-01/02, PPC-CC-02/03/04, PPC-BA-01/02)

The golden rule

Oxidizers and fuels belong in separate storage areas, ideally separate buildings or magazines, never in the mixing room itself. Your local regulations set the required separation. When in doubt: more distance and more walls. If two materials could form a composition on the shelf, they should never share one.
